The NYU Science Diplomacy Club aims to connect STEM-focused students and postdocs to careers and opportunities related to science diplomacy. We welcome members from across NYU's campuses and the greater NYC community. Here, you can find similarly interested individuals with whom to attend regularly scheduled off-campus networking events, and with whom you can develop/sponsor on-campus events. The club strives to be egalitarian with leadership opportunities by providing all members with the opportunity to lead or join focused "initiative" areas. We are in communication with other graduate science diplomacy/policy clubs in the northeast to promote further networking and facilitate event planning and development of the burgeoning science diplomacy community.
The Science and Education Policy Association (SEPA) is a student and post-doc run organization founded at the Tri-Institute – Weill Cornell Medicine, The Rockefeller University, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center – aiming to facilitate the interaction between scientists and the world of science policy.
Scientists are uniquely qualified to speak on science-related issues, both to advocate on behalf of science research and to communicate how science is beneficial to the public good. Bringing scientists to the forefront of these conversations will lead to more informed policies. Within the Tri-I and broader NYC community, SEPA works on:
- Empower our community: SEPA believes that scientists are also citizens, and therefore have the responsibility to contribute their voice to political discourse.
- Active engagement: We run topical discussion sessions and expert talks, and travel as a group to the major science policy and diplomacy conferences in the country.
- Building the future: We host career panels and provide information about possible channels for scientists to make a career in policymaking.
The Fletcher Science Diplomacy club aims to raise awareness of the growing field of science diplomacy, highlighting the role of science in informing sound policy-making, solving global challenges and improving international relations. The club provides a forum for students, at the Fletcher School and beyond, to explore and understand issues at the intersection of science and international relations.
In particular, the club aims to:
- bring relevant speakers (science diplomats and government advisors, scientists and science diplomacy scholars) to Fletcher to raise awareness within the school,
- liaise and co-organize events with other Boston-based universities to build momentum within the greater Boston area,
- develop connections between the Fletcher School and national / international organizations,
- further position the Fletcher School as a leader in the science diplomacy field so that it can provide an academic science diplomacy educational track and,
- create opportunities for students interested in careers in science diplomacy or with a scientific component.
The MIT Science Policy Initiative, founded in 2007, is a group of graduate (and some undergraduate) students who work closely with MIT Faculty, the MIT Washington DC Office, and other science policy advocates to better understand how scientists can play a central role in the framing of science and technology policy legislation and public discourse. We strive to create better scientists and engineers as well as a better society through rigorous research and authentic engagement with public policy.
The Science Policy Initiative at UVa is a graduate student organization established for the express purpose of:
- Enhancing awareness among graduate students in STEM disciplines about fellowship and career opportunities in science policy.
- Providing support and resources for graduate students pursuing opportunities in science policy.
- Conducting professional development events to prepare graduate students for careers in science policy.
- Advocating to the university administration for support of graduate students pursuing policy careers.
- Facilitating community outreach events to increase awareness and understanding of scientific research among the community.
